The Rev. Dr. Mauricio Wilson, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oakland, was elected president of the Union of Black Episcopalians on July 23. Wilson previously served as director of the group’s Western Region.
In his new role, he continues a two-century tradition of African American leadership in The Episcopal Church, from the Rev. Absalom Jones, to the Rev. James T. Holly, the Rev. Alexander Crummell, and Bishop Barbara Harris, to today’s lay and clergy leaders.
The Union of Black Episcopalians is an independent confederation of 55 chapters and interest groups across The Episcopal Church. Its mission is to advocate for racial and social justice, as well as to build community among members of the African diaspora within the church and the world.
